Attic Ventilation
In my opinion ventilation for an attic is necessary just like juices are necessary for health. As an expert says that "No complete attic is safe for storage unless it is accurately ventilated". So ventilation is very necessary for an attic as well as complete home.Proper ventilation is helpful to reduce humidity and excessive temperature of the attic. Humidity can build naturally, so to reduce humidity factor you can use dehumidifier. It is mechanical equipment that reduces humidity and temperature of the attic area. Excessive temperature and humidity are causing congestion to the attic. In such cases the breezy air comes into the loft to escape through that nearby attic causing the roof hotter due to interior temperature of the attic.
Our home engineer recommends us an electric fan for attic. He said that it is less expensive and lasting or sustainable up to 20 years or more than 20 years. I was glad to hear that idea; and I did implement it and got best results to have an electric fan rather HVAC system for attic. I would like to tell you about its functioning.
This electric fan can operate automatically in case of incessant heating or excessive heating in attic. This fan automatically runs when temperature reaches 100 degree. This fan draws fresh air in attic and suck out the existing. Another great feature of this fan is fire stat. In case of fire in attic this fire stat equipment automatically becomes active. This fire stat can control temperature that dramatically increases some time.
Attic Insulation
I would say that insulation and ventilation are hand in hand. Insulation and Ventilation process are working together. Insulation proceeds as barrier. The word barrier is quite noticeable! What does that mean? A barrier works as controlling the heat and measures the heat transfer between the second story and attic. Mostly attics are operated by HVAC system or central heating system. If you tend to go long with attic storage then it is necessary to work with separate attic insulation system.I may recommend you to consult with your climate department in your city to check out your attic R-value. The climate department may guide you better. You can call them for visiting your attic. They can measure the right R-value (efficiency rate) of your attic and they can give you best solution. Before installing an insulation system you must check out your home as well as attic (the R-value). This action could save your higher operating expenses. Enjoy your attic by all means!!
I have got some efficiency terms/standards from the Federal Government of USA that I reproduced below as I got.
If you're using heating equipments like furnace, heat pump, heat resistance pump in your home then it is better to be familiar with some heating efficiency ratings and standards. I would like to confirm that I have got these efficiency ratings from DOE (Department of Energy) that is a federal agency of USA. They set up some industry efficiency standards.
AFUE%: It is furnace efficiency. It stands for "Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency". AFUE is a measure of a furnace heating efficiency. Elevated AFUE percentage, the product can work more efficiently. The government's established minimum rating for furnaces is 78% for US only.
HSPF: Heat pump heating efficiency. It stands for "Heating Seasonal Performance Factor". Elevated the HSPF rating, the heat pump can work more efficiently. There is no legislated minimum rating.
SEER: Cooling Efficiency. SEER is a calculator of cooling efficiency for air conditioning products. SEER stands for "Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio". Elevated the SEER ranking or rating, the product can work more efficiently. The government's established minimum rating for air conditioning is 10% for US only.
