Bathroom cabinet refinish

If your cabinet layout and storage space is acceptable, then refinishing and repainting is an economical option. Cabinets made of solid wood or plywood can be repainted. Metal cabinets require automotive-quality painting for best results. Paint bonds poorly to laminate or melamine cabinets and will soon begin to peel and chip, especially in the moist atmosphere of the bathroom. If you chose to refinish your bathroom cabinets, ensure that they are in good shape so that they last at least another ten years before you take on the task again.

The sides of cabinets usually start wearing out fast. See that the floors of all the cabinets are dry and have no wood rot. Kitchen cabinets can accumulate a lot of grease and grime throughout the years and it may take considerable effort to get it off them. Sanding can be done to give a smooth finish and remove irregularities and gloss. It will also help the paint stay on them. After sanding it is necessary to vacuum up the dust or remove it with a moist cotton cloth. While painting, remove the cabinet doors and hardware. Apply a coat of paint or varnish with a brush or roller. Use spray painting only if you have a large surface to cover. First paint the exteriors of the cabinet and when that is drying, the frames and sides can be painted. Finally the interiors can be painted. Once it is completely dry, another coat of paint or varnish can be added if required.

Bathroom cabinet refurbish

Professional cabinet refurbish is the most economical way to give your old cabinets a new lease of life. Cabinets in colors like blue, pastels, gray and yellow can yield surprising results. Before embarking on the refinishing process, keep in mind the following -

  1. Properly prepare the surface.
  2. Anticipate problem areas
  3. Use high quality coatings and follow the manufacturer's recommendations
  4. A shelf support must fit into the hole otherwise it may fall out. When new holes are being drilled, place them correctly. The existing holes can be plugged in. Drill holes that are 1/16 inch deeper than the length of the shelf support dowel (pin).
  5. If the hinges are weak, replace them. Choose hinges with mounting holes that match those of the existing hinges. If you decide to switch between identical hinges, do so only when the door is in place.
  6. If you have old-fashioned magnet or spring catches on cabinet doors that do not work, adjust them. Loosen the screws and move the catch in or out as needed, and tighten the screws.
  7. Replace the knobs if necessary. Sometimes a good cleaning and abrasion process will suffice to make the old knobs and handles as good as new.
