The next step is to cut the back. You can double check all your cuts to make sure the back is going to fit, and if you want, you can make it 1/8" smaller than what you think it should be (or the measurements supplied here). That way it won't be too tight. Also, check to see that it fits into the groove smoothly and will easily be able to move around, without being sloppy.

Measure, mark, and cut the back panel, trying to arrange the grain vertically.

Select a side and top piece and apply glue to the dado on the side piece. You want enough so that it covers well, but will not squeeze out all over. This is something that just takes practice.

Fit the pieces together so that the back dado is together. I usually like to build cabinets on the floor since my bench isn't big enough. Make sure there is nothing on the floor to make the pieces uneven.

Now you can nail or screw the side piece to the top. Then glue the other side piece and nail it in place.

You can temporarily set the top piece in place and use clamps, but do NOT glue it in place.

It's a good idea to do this so that you can make sure everything is fits right.

Take the top back off and slide the back panel into the groove. This can sometimes be a little tricky, just be patient.

Test to see that the top will still fit and then glue the side rabbets and put the top piece in place. Nail or screw with three nails/screws on each side. You now have the carcass finished!

Now Make the Face-frame

Our next step is making the face-frame to attach to the front of the carcass. Set your cabinet aside to dry and we'll get started in the next article.Hand Tools for Kitchen Custom Cabinet Building and Wood Working.
