Workbench Design

For carpenters, engineer, gardeners and the like, working with their hands is one of the most relaxing activities there are. In fact, they usually don’t consider it work, it’s what they like to do and if they can get paid for it, so much the better.

A lot of them have special tools at home, and a place dedicated to work, either for their customers or for personal projects. These tools vary from trade to trade, but the one that every one of them has is a workbench.

A workbench is one of the most useful tools there are. It offers a big surface to work on, and it also has a way of securing objects so that the person can use both hands to work on it.

Hardware equipment stores sell workbenches of different brands that come in standard sizes. However, a lot of people decide to make their own workbench design and build it themselves.

Building a workbench from your own workbench design might sound difficult to those that aren’t interested in building. However, we are talking about people that like to imagine objects in their minds and then build them. In fact, most of them have an ideal “workbench design” in their heads that they’ve made over time every time they see the commercial workbenches. They think things like “this one could use a saw”, or “this one lacks enough electrical outlets”, or “this one would be perfect if it were just a little bit longer.”

If they don’t have a workbench at their workplaces or they want for some reason to have one at home, then they decide to finally take that workbench design that they’ve had in their minds for so long and put it in paper. When this workbench design is on paper, it’s forced to go from an idealistic image to a realistic design that is constrained by sizes, materials and budget. This is a good thing, as it points out any flaws in the original workbench design that have to be corrected before making the workbench.

In addition, having the workbench design in a plan lets you make an exact copy of the built workbench in the future, for example, in case you need to replace it, fix it, or make one for a friend or neighbor. And for the true professionals, it allows them to copyright it and sell it in a book or manual that includes their best workbench designs or designs of any other kinds.

In conclusion, like any other project, it pays to take the time to make a workbench design on paper before construction. It will save you time and trouble both during construction and in the future.
