Garage Workbench

Building and fixing things is usually a men’s activity. Of course, women are as capable of building and fixing things as well, and I’ve met a few ladies that have really impressed me with the quality of their work. It’s just that men tend to prefer these activities more than women, just like football.

One of the places we like to get away from everything and dedicate some time to build a small piece of furniture or fix the radio is our garage. It is somehow still considered a man’s place and it doesn’t have really anything of interest for the children or the wives.

Over time, we slowly start to fill up a wall with all the tools that we’ve bough over time. I grant that some of them are ridiculously overpriced for what they do, and some of them we used only once or twice. But yet, we like them and we buy them.

One tool that we definitely use is our garage workbench. In fact, a garage workbench is one of the first things we install (if not the first) when we are really serious about dedicating time to building and fixing.

There are several types of workbenches that are sold in Home Mart and similar stores. They are all pretty good, but we always want something special for our garage workbench. Sometimes it means a certain color (I know a guy that painted his garage workbench with the colors of the Dallas Cowboys). Sometimes it means a certain tool or set of tools. It all depends on personal taste.

In addition, since a garage wasn’t build with a garage workbench in mind, it might not have the exact dimensions of the workbenches that are sold commercially. If the garage workbench that we bought it’s too big, it won’t fit into the space. If the garage workbench is too small, there will be some unused space that will probably end up cluttered with leftover material.

That’s why a lot of people build their own garage workbench. That way, they can make sure that it has the exact dimensions that they need, and the exact accessories that they want. They can even decorate it and personalize it like my friend mentioned above.

One of the advantages of building your own garage workbench is that you will save some dollars, provided you have access to the necessary tools. In addition, it is a very good test to see if it’s really worth for you to invest more in building and fixing as a hobby. If you can’t build your own garage workbench or you find it hard or boring to do, well, then maybe you should get a different hobby.
